2002 Ferrari 550

From the 250 California to the 365 GTS/4 "Daytona" Spider, Ferrari's greatest open tourers have long paired front-engine V12 performance with the elegance of Carrozzeria Pininfarina, whose styling shaped many of Maranello's most celebrated road cars from 1952 until 2012. Introduced at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina was conceived as both a celebration of Pininfarina's 70th anniversary and a modern tribute to Ferrari's glorious lineage of open-top grand tourers.

Based on the 550 Maranello, it retained the coupe's sleek proportions and 48-valve, 5.5-liter V12 producing 485 CV, while adopting a more elemental barchetta format with a shortened windshield, twin roll hoops, and a number of exclusive details. Among the most distinctive were its aluminum fuel filler cap, Scuderia shields, five-spoke two-piece Speedline magnesium wheels, and a cabin trimmed with standard carbon-fiber race seats, black Lorica dashboard upholstery, exposed carbon-fiber accents, and a plaque bearing Sergio Pininfarina's signature and the car's individual serial number.

The plaque in this particular 550 Barchetta identifies it as number 254 of just 448 produced, and the car is especially compelling in its rare optional specification of Rosso Dino over Nero leather, further complemented by Nero brake calipers. A digital copy of its original service and warranty book records delivery through Auto Palace S.A. in Les Tourrades, France, on 5 November 2001. The first owner is noted as prominent French businessman Jean Claude Mimran, whose address is listed as the famed Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. Together with his brother Patrick, the Mimran family previously owned the Lamborghini brand in the late 1970s through 1987, overseeing an important chapter in the company's history during which the Countach was further developed and the Jalpa joined the model range. The car reportedly later spent time in Gstaad, Switzerland, before passing to new ownership in 2005, at which time it was showing just 4,400 kilometers.

Since joining the current Italian caretaker's collection, this limited-edition homage to Ferrari and Pininfarina's then half-century partnership continues to present in collector-grade condition, with 9,394 kilometers at the time of cataloging. The car also carries a bespoke all-weather hardtop in matching Rosso Dino, crafted by Bendl & Voß GdbR, meaningfully transforming the Barchetta into a more versatile grand tourer for variable conditions.

Save for the 575 Superamerica, the 550 Barchetta marked the last opportunity to experience the click of a steel gearshift lever striking the aluminum gate while absorbing the howling V12 exhaust note from an open cabin-all of which this example delivers in a striking and rarely seen livery.
